I'm having a lot of fun painting these small portrait studies.
I thought you might enjoy seeing this one progress from start to finish.

I started with orange on the canvas board. I didn't do a drawing first,
just started blocking in shapes loosely with a dark brown/purple.

Then I used a light value and started blocking in the light areas.

Being a little more careful here as I indicated the brow ridge
and eye sockets/lids.

Used a dark value to define the eyes a little more and
also put some dark into the hair and neck area.

Added some strokes of a light value to define the forehead,
the area above the mouth, and the chin.

Defined the nose a little more and filled in the cheek and jaw area.
Also added highlights to the cheek bone.

Added highlights to the eyes, eye brows,
and a few more highlights here and there. Almost done.

Here's a close up of the eye.
